How Crucial are Ketones?

 


Ketones are extremely crucial for metabolic function in a truly carb-free (zero or near-zero carbohydrate) state, especially once you've passed the early adaptation phase. Here's a breakdown of their significance:

🔥 Why Ketones Are Crucial in Carb-Free Metabolism

1. Primary Alternative to Glucose

When carbohydrate intake drops to near zero, blood glucose levels fall, and the body must find an alternative energy source—this is where ketones step in.

Liver converts fatty acids into ketone bodies (mainly beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate, and a small amount of acetone).

These ketones are then used by the brain, heart, and muscles as a clean-burning fuel.


2. Brain Energy Supply

The brain typically runs on glucose, but in a carb-deprived state:
